Annual Appeal 2017

Guest post from Board Member, Ginger Lubkowitz

Vermont has many treasures but one of my absolute favorites is the Birds of Vermont Museum. Each time I visit, I am amazed by the carvings and the setting. I am also amazed by the creative programs and talented staff that carry forward and embody Bob Spear’s legacy every day. We are so fortunate that adults and children have such a special venue to learn about birds, their songs, and their habitats.

All of this is possible thanks to the generosity of you, the Museum’s members and donors. Because of you, 2017 was a pivotal year for the Museum as it celebrated its 30-year anniversary and looked to the future. Here are a few highlights of our activity and progress:

  • The new bridge and treehouse, both completed in 2016, became part of our landscape and stand as true symbols of resilience, strength, and community.
  • Our members supported our mission and many participated in our strategic planning survey to inform our future.
  • Our two bird blinds, built by students from Center for Technology, Essex, were featured by Audubon magazine, in an article about bird blinds across the country.
  • Close to 4000 people visited and participated in our programs including our bird walks, programs for seniors, and our Nestlings and Fledglings programs.
  • Visitors came from 35 US states, 4 Canadian provinces, and 9 additional countries.
  • Our Birding by the Numbers exhibit featured Vermont artists integrating a sense of number with artistic expressions about birds.
  • Increased outreach brought our programs deeper into the community and gave us more visibility and versatility, and grew our partnerships.
  • Significant trail work expanded opportunities for monitoring and observing birds in natural habitats.
  • New carvings by Jim Mitchell, Dick Allen, and Dona Norton were installed in our exhibits.

Every donation contributes to the Museum’s ability to nurture an appreciation of birds and the environment. During this season of thanks and generosity, please make a year-end contribution today to support this treasure of a place. It would not be what it is without you and its community of supporters.

When you make your donation of $250 or more you will receive a hand-carved Blue Jay ornament.

Do you have a friend or family member who would like to visit the Museum more frequently or perhaps for the first time? Or someone who can’t get here but would enjoy receiving our newsletter? Consider giving them a gift membership for just $25. See the enclosed card for details.

Thank you,

Ginger

p.s. A late October windstorm took down many trees in our woods and left one leaning on Bob’s retreat. Fortunately, the structural damage appears to have been minimal, but the cleanup will be quite a task. Those surprise expenses and “projects” are another reason we rely so much on our members and our volunteers. Thank you again for your support.
