Seasonal Museum Assistant

The Birds of Vermont Museum seeks a person to fill a part-time seasonal position assisting with guest services and the daily operations and upkeep of the Birds of Vermont Museum.

Reports to: Executive Director

Primary Purpose of Job: The primary responsibility of this position is to assist with guest services and the daily operations and upkeep of the Birds of Vermont Museum.

Hours: Fourteen (14) hours/week from May 1, 2024, to October 31, 2024, from 9:30am – 4:30 pm.
The work week includes one weekend day and occasional holidays. Additional hours and/or different days may be requested by the Museum, with notice. A few paid training days may be required in April.

Salary: $15/hour

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily at the Birds of Vermont Museum and within the community. Limited travel may be required.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Greet public and answer questions relating to the Birds of Vermont Museum, birds, and neighboring attractions.
    • Responsible for selling admission to visitors, introducing the Museum, answering phone, showing introductory video, answering questions. May give presentations including woodcarving.
  2. Work in Museum gift shop: selling merchandise, using POS (Square), and restocking merchandise.
  3. Work with other staff to maintain volunteer relations and schedule.
  4. Assist with office work, preparation of educational activities, and maintaining a clean environment for visitors to the Museum.
  5. Assist with special events and educational programs as needed, off-site museum activities and exhibits, including community special events.
  6. Assist with data entry.
  7. Assist with outdoor duties including but not limited to: trail work, gardening, and feeding birds, checking and preparing the retreat for guests.
  8. Care for collection by visual checks, dusting, etc.
  9. Maintain Museum bulletin boards with relevant and interesting information.

Qualifications

  1. Is at least 16 years old.
  2. Has an interest in natural history, Vermont flora and fauna, wood carving, nature-focused art, and/or museum work.
  3. Demonstrates an ability to communicate effectively to individuals and small groups.
  4. Is responsible, accountable, and able to work independently.
  5. Has the ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships and to deal effectively and courteously with other employees, volunteers, and the public.
  6. Has the ability to handle money and make change accurately.
  7. Is able and willing to work weekends and holidays.
  8. Has the ability to read, understand, and interpret written material and/or oral instructions.

Note

  1. Work includes both indoors and outdoor tasks
  2. Work may require walking on uneven trails and moving throughout the building.
  3. Occasionally assist with moving or unpacking supplies and gift shop items. Boxes could weigh up to 40 pounds.
