SUMMARY:From Crawdads to Crows: critters that should and critters that shouldn't
DESCRIPTION:Scientist Melanie Giangreco and museum staff will share how invasive aquatic invertebrates can impact Vermont waterways and ultimately birds. \nWe will start indoors\, introducing some native and invasive animals\, freshwater habitats\, and typical birds. After discussion and observations\, we will visit an upland forest pond and a typical Vermont brook. What is actually here\, what could change\, and how can we help? We will end with conversation and a chance to examine some animals more closely (with stereo- and microscopes). \nThis workshop is ideal for the curious\, adventurous\, and those willing to get a bit muddy. \nBest for ages 10 and up; children must have an adult with them.\nSuggested donation: $10 per person (includes museum admission after the program)\nMax participants: 20 people\nRegister with the button below or call 802 434-2167.\nLet’s Learn! \nDress for being outdoors and near water: that means boots\, ticks\, mud\, uneven terrain and more! \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED : Meander for Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:We’re sorry but we have had to cancel this event. We hope to offer it again sometime! \nIt’s widely known that some fungi are decomposers\, but did you know that they can also eat plastic\, clean up oil spills\, hunt for prey\, and enable trees to talk to each other? \nJoin mycology educator\, macro photographer\, and author Meg Madden on a mushroom curiosity walk to learn more about the lives of these fascinating organisms. On this walk we will explore the woods and talk about the mushrooms we find along the way including what they are and how to identify them. \nFrom building soil to connecting trees\, we will go over the essential roles that fungi play within their natural communities. From environmental remediation to mycelium-based green building materials\, we’ll also learn about some of the unique ways fungi can help us navigate our way in a more planet-friendly manner. \nMeg will also discuss the importance of community science\, how you can contribute to Vermont’s growing database of fungi species on iNaturalist\, and share tips and tricks for taking scientific grade mushroom photos. \nWear comfortable walking shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and bring your questions and curiosity! A smartphone equipped with the iNaturalist app is a plus\, but not required. \nSigned copies of Meg’s new book\, This Is A Book For People Who Love Mushrooms is available for purchase in the Musuem’s Gift Shop. \nNote: this is NOT a foraging program.\n \nAbout Meg Madden\nFungi educator\, author\, and professional photographer\, Meg Madden can often be found in the forests of her childhood practicing what she calls “mushroom yoga” — laying on the ground\, standing on her head\, or balancing precariously on a log — to capture the perfect snail’s-eye view of her favorite photo subject: Fungi! Her colorful\, highly detailed mushroom portraits offer an intimate look into the often-overlooked world of these extraordinary organisms. \nInspired by the belief that people are more likely to take care of something they love\, she finds great joy in facilitating fun and meaningful connections between humans and nature. Meg shares her knowledge and contagious passion for the fantastic world of fungi through visually engaging presentations\, mushroom walks\, and via her Instagram gallery @megmaddendesign. An advocate for fungal diversity and community science\, Meg teaches iNaturalist classes\, organizes educational workshops and Bioblitzes\, and is compiling an Atlas Of Fungi for the state of Vermont. \nwww.instagram.com/megmaddendesign/\nlinktr.ee/MegMadden

SUMMARY:Walking Stick Carving with Bob Lindemann
DESCRIPTION:Create  a Eagle-head walking stick with Bob Lindemann. \nSpend your morning learning to carve a small Bellamy Eagle head with Bob. \nAfter lunch\, Bob will hand out a Striped Maple “Moose Maple” stick for each participant.  You will carve down the top of the stick\, and use what you learned in the morning to carve the eagle onto the top of the stick. You can then carve other things on the stick. \n \nYour walking stick will be “green/wet wood” (just cut) so it’s a bit easier to carve. It will need to dry at home over the winter. These can be painted in the spring (after fully drying) at home\, or add a name on it\, etc. \nOpen to all but a bit of experience helps\, especially when your get to the stick which is more difficult than the practice piece. It is best if you already have a knife and glove; please call the Museum if you do not. \nClass is $45 (there is a $10 discount for members) \nRegister at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/walking-stick-carving-with-bob-lindemann-registration-1044026971777 or use the button below. If the class fills\, please join the waitlist.Register via Eventbrite \nRegister\n\nMax 8 attendees as there are 4 tables\, and when we carve a 4′ stick we like to avoid poking each other…

SUMMARY:Vermont Beetles
DESCRIPTION:Beetles (Order: Coleoptera) are a fascinating yet vastly understudied taxonomic group. In Vermont alone\, there are over 1\,000 different species! Some groups provide important roles as pollinators\, biological controls\, decomposers\, and more. Other beetles\, such as the invasive Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) threaten the health of our ecosystems. \nJoin us to learn about the ecology and identification of different groups of beetles found in Vermont.\nRegister through Eventbrite\nRegister for Beetles\n\n\nIn this two hour workshop\, we will spend about 45 minutes focusing on a few families\, genera\, and species of note. For the remaining hour and 15 minutes\, we will go outside and search for beetles around the Birds of Vermont museum\, identifying as we go. \nAbout Julia Pupko (they/them):\nJulia is the former coordinator of the Vermont Lady Beetle Atlas through the Vermont Atlas of Life at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. Currently\, Julia works for Vermont Forests\, Parks and Recreation at the Forest Biology Lab\, with a special interest on the intersection between forest health and entomology. \nAdditionally\, Julia volunteers in a number of roles for Sosyete pou Rebwaze Duchity Haiti (SRDH) – a community-based reforestation and agroforestry organization operating in Duchity\, Haiti. In their spare time\, Julia enjoys painting\, spending time with their birds\, hiking\, and (of course) searching for insects. \nImages provided by Julie Pupko of Vermont Center for Ecostudies.
