SUMMARY:CANCELLED : Meander for Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:We’re sorry but we have had to cancel this event. We hope to offer it again sometime! \nIt’s widely known that some fungi are decomposers\, but did you know that they can also eat plastic\, clean up oil spills\, hunt for prey\, and enable trees to talk to each other? \nJoin mycology educator\, macro photographer\, and author Meg Madden on a mushroom curiosity walk to learn more about the lives of these fascinating organisms. On this walk we will explore the woods and talk about the mushrooms we find along the way including what they are and how to identify them. \nFrom building soil to connecting trees\, we will go over the essential roles that fungi play within their natural communities. From environmental remediation to mycelium-based green building materials\, we’ll also learn about some of the unique ways fungi can help us navigate our way in a more planet-friendly manner. \nMeg will also discuss the importance of community science\, how you can contribute to Vermont’s growing database of fungi species on iNaturalist\, and share tips and tricks for taking scientific grade mushroom photos. \nWear comfortable walking shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and bring your questions and curiosity! A smartphone equipped with the iNaturalist app is a plus\, but not required. \nSigned copies of Meg’s new book\, This Is A Book For People Who Love Mushrooms is available for purchase in the Musuem’s Gift Shop. \nNote: this is NOT a foraging program.\n \nAbout Meg Madden\nFungi educator\, author\, and professional photographer\, Meg Madden can often be found in the forests of her childhood practicing what she calls “mushroom yoga” — laying on the ground\, standing on her head\, or balancing precariously on a log — to capture the perfect snail’s-eye view of her favorite photo subject: Fungi! Her colorful\, highly detailed mushroom portraits offer an intimate look into the often-overlooked world of these extraordinary organisms. \nInspired by the belief that people are more likely to take care of something they love\, she finds great joy in facilitating fun and meaningful connections between humans and nature. Meg shares her knowledge and contagious passion for the fantastic world of fungi through visually engaging presentations\, mushroom walks\, and via her Instagram gallery @megmaddendesign. An advocate for fungal diversity and community science\, Meg teaches iNaturalist classes\, organizes educational workshops and Bioblitzes\, and is compiling an Atlas Of Fungi for the state of Vermont. \nwww.instagram.com/megmaddendesign/\nlinktr.ee/MegMadden

DESCRIPTION:We are really enjoying this “sunset” series. Come along for another walk with us! \nEnjoy a sunset stroll around the Museum’s forests and clearings and “meet” some of them. Erin Talmage and Ali Wagner will lead the walk. \nAlthough we may see and hear fewer species than we do at dawn\, a late day ramble gives us more time to appreciate each kind and to better learn their songs. In addition\, we may observe moths\, frogs\, other insects\, and maybe even a mammal or two. \nPlease call 802 434-2167 to reserve your spot\, or try the button below:\nRegister \nMax: 8\nSuggested donation: $5-$15\nMeet at the Museum entrance \nConditions: Trails can be muddy and uneven\, and there are some slopes. We usually walk then pause for observation. Some benches here and there provide additional rest points. \nTick protection is recommended. \nPhoto: Hermit Thrush by Mark Paul. SUMMARY:Sunset Bird/Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Not an early riser? You’re not alone. Some birds also prefer to sing\, call\, or display in late afternoon and early evening. \nEnjoy a another sunset stroll around the Museum’s forests and clearings and “meet” some of them. \nPlease call 802 434-2167 to reserve your spot\, or try the button below:\n \nRegister \nMax: 8\nSuggested donation: $5-$15\nMeet at the Museum entrance \nConditions: Trails can be muddy and uneven\, and there are some slopes. We usually walk then pause for observation. Some benches here and there provide additional rest points. \nTick protection is recommended. \nPhoto: Hermit Thrush by Mark Paul. SUMMARY:Bird-craft for Community & Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a hands-on workshop where people of all ages and skill levels “craft for a cause” by creating soft-sculpture replicas of real birds lost to collisions and learn practical ways we can help protect birds in the built environment. \nBird Collisions in the Anthropocene leads this event at the Birds of Vermont Museum. They are a community art and advocacy project raising awareness about bird building collisions—a leading cause of bird mortality in the United States. \nIncluded with museum admission (free for museum members!). \nRegister online\, or call us (802 434-2167)\, or just drop in!\nRegister\nOutdoors if weather permits\nAll ages & skill levels welcome! All materials provided! \nMore About the Workshop\nMake a small fabric bird based on a real migratory bird found in Vermont for Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene\, a community-sourced conservation art project. Learn about migratory birds in Vermont and the hazards of glass windows\, while we craft together. \nAt this bird-crafting workshop\, you will decorate a small\, pre-made fabric “bird body” with natural fabrics and small decorations like beads\, shells\, and buttons that you choose from our supplies. You’ll attach them using water-soluble tacky glue. The aim is to make your bird resemble a real bird species affected by building collisions. But\, no pressure! You don’t have to be an artist or a crafter to use your imagination to bring a bird to life. \nSPECIES WE’LL BE CRAFTING:\n\nCommon Yellowthroat\nMagnolia Warbler\nAmerican Redstart\nOvenbird\nCedar Waxwing\nBrown Creeper\nSwamp Sparrow\n\nOur “sculptures” will become part of a traveling art exhibit of 10\,000+ birds\, raising awareness about bird building collisions in the United States\, a leading cause of bird mortality. Every year\, nearly 2 billion birds die after colliding with glass in our country. Migratory birds are disproportionately affected by collisions. \nCome craft a bird\, bring a friend\, meet new friends\, and enjoy a wonderful morning of “crafting for a cause.”  \nSee one of the workshops in action! https://www.instagram.com/p/C9UyjXhRx0u/?hl=en

SUMMARY:Birds and Myth art show continues (August)
DESCRIPTION:Birds and Myth continues in August! Visit often\, as some works are for sale and may go to new homes during the season. \nBirds are some of our teachers\, not only through our senses and observations\, but also through our stories about them. These stories can be factual accounts\, broader myths\, or something in between. Legends\, beliefs\, representations\, truth\, insight\, guidance\, metaphors\, meanings\, and understandings all play a part. \nThe Birds of Vermont Museum’s 2025 art show is centered on the ideas of birds\, myth\, meanings\, metaphors\, and guides. We called for art that brings birds and their meanings to retell an old story\, weaves several together\, represents beliefs\, and/or creates a myth for the future. \nThe show is open when the Museum is (Wednesday – Sundays\, May 1 – October 31) and is included with admission. Admission is free for members. \nExhibiting artists and writers:\nAlice C (Burlington )\nAlison Forrest (Huntington)\nAlyssa B (Colchester)\nAmanda Makepeace (Watkinsville\, GA)\nAnita Michele (Swanton)\nAnnette Goyne (Richford)\nAprille Soons Palmer (South Hero)\nCat McKeen (Essex Junction)\nChris Selin (South Burlington)\nDara Theodora (Fairfax)\nDeana Allgaier (Huntington)\nDeb Runge (Williston)\nDenise Letendre (Castleton)\nElisabeth Mazzilli (Moretown)\nElodie Parthenay (Longueuil\, QC)\nGreg Didyoung (Wilmington)\nHannah Mahar (Grand Isle)\nHeather Rusch Zelonis (Bristol)\nHenry S (Jericho)\nJamie Quint (Richmond)\nJennefer Jolls (Williamstown)\nJessica Wilson (Saint Albans)\nJo Marsan (Johnson)\nJoAnne Wazny (Enosburg Falls)\nJudy Crocker (Burlington )\nJulia S C (South Hero)\nJulie Dunigan (South Hero)\nKarla Van Vliet (Bristol)\nKatrina Meyers (Colchester)\nKay Johnson (Hinesburg)\nKristen Donegan (Essex)\nKristin Dexter (Essex Junction)\nLily Hinrichsen (Bristol)\nLisa Acerbo (Trumbull\, CT)\nMarcia Vogler (Charlotte)\nMiriam Adams (Hinesburg)\nNancy Leeman (Huntington)\nNancy Stone (Williston)\nNicole Gadouas (Swanton)\nOlin P (Middlebury)\nPatrick McAllister (Burlington )\nPedro Salas (Starksboro )\nPeter Aldrich (Essex Junction)\nRichard Crocker (Burlington )\nSandra Morris (East Middlebury)\nSandra VanVooren (East Hartford\, CT)\nSarah Rosedahl (North Hero)\nSteven Farrar (Richmond)\nTheo Chang Andreu (South Burlington)\nTodd Kiel (Bolton)\nTonya Whitney (Williston)\nTricia Knoll (Williston)\nViviane P (Richmond)\nWilliam Chaiken\n

SUMMARY:Birds and Myth art show continues (July)
DESCRIPTION:Birds and Myth continues in July! Visit often\, as some works are for sale and may go to new homes during the season. \nBirds are some of our teachers\, not only through our senses and observations\, but also through our stories about them. These stories can be factual accounts\, broader myths\, or something in between. Legends\, beliefs\, representations\, truth\, insight\, guidance\, metaphors\, meanings\, and understandings all play a part. \nThe Birds of Vermont Museum’s 2025 art show is centered on the ideas of birds\, myth\, meanings\, metaphors\, and guides. We called for art that brings birds and their meanings to retell an old story\, weaves several together\, represents beliefs\, and/or creates a myth for the future. \nThe show is open when the Museum is (Wednesday – Sundays\, May 1 – October 31) and is included with admission. Admission is free for members. \nExhibiting artists and writers:\nAlice C (Burlington )\nAlison Forrest (Huntington)\nAlyssa B (Colchester)\nAmanda Makepeace (Watkinsville\, GA)\nAnita Michele (Swanton)\nAnnette Goyne (Richford)\nAprille Soons Palmer (South Hero)\nCat McKeen (Essex Junction)\nChris Selin (South Burlington)\nDara Theodora (Fairfax)\nDeana Allgaier (Huntington)\nDeb Runge (Williston)\nDenise Letendre (Castleton)\nElisabeth Mazzilli (Moretown)\nElodie Parthenay (Longueuil\, QC)\nGreg Didyoung (Wilmington)\nHannah Mahar (Grand Isle)\nHeather Rusch Zelonis (Bristol)\nHenry S (Jericho)\nJamie Quint (Richmond)\nJennefer Jolls (Williamstown)\nJessica Wilson (Saint Albans)\nJo Marsan (Johnson)\nJoAnne Wazny (Enosburg Falls)\nJudy Crocker (Burlington )\nJulia S C (South Hero)\nJulie Dunigan (South Hero)\nKarla Van Vliet (Bristol)\nKatrina Meyers (Colchester)\nKay Johnson (Hinesburg)\nKristen Donegan (Essex)\nKristin Dexter (Essex Junction)\nLily Hinrichsen (Bristol)\nLisa Acerbo (Trumbull\, CT)\nMarcia Vogler (Charlotte)\nMiriam Adams (Hinesburg)\nNancy Leeman (Huntington)\nNancy Stone (Williston)\nNicole Gadouas (Swanton)\nOlin P (Middlebury)\nPatrick McAllister (Burlington )\nPedro Salas (Starksboro )\nPeter Aldrich (Essex Junction)\nRichard Crocker (Burlington )\nSandra Morris (East Middlebury)\nSandra VanVooren (East Hartford\, CT)\nSarah Rosedahl (North Hero)\nSteven Farrar (Richmond)\nTheo Chang Andreu (South Burlington)\nTodd Kiel (Bolton)\nTonya Whitney (Williston)\nTricia Knoll (Williston)\nViviane P (Richmond)\nWilliam Chaiken\n
