SUMMARY:A Naturalist’s Guide to Drawing and Painting Birds (August)
DESCRIPTION:Explore the beauty of nature through art in this workshop at the Birds of Vermont Museum in Huntington\, VT. We will be tapping into the rich resource of Bob Spear’s dioramas and the museum’s natural history library to draw and paint birds in their natural habitats. Touching on bird anatomy and reflecting on habitats\, we will use watercolor and colored pencils for our artworks.  3–hour workshop (Includes all materials) \nInstructor: Chris Selin\, an instructor with the Davis Studio\, and one of the Museum’s exhibiting artists. \nRegister with the Davis Studio at https://davisstudiovt.com/product/a-naturalists-guide-to-drawing-and-painting-birds-summer-2025/ \nTime: 10 a.m.–1 p.m. \nLocation: Birds of Vermont Museum\, 900 Sherman Hollow Rd\, Huntington\, VT 05462 \nThe workshop will begin with observing and sketching skeletons\, feathers\, and colors from the collection. Then\, the Instructor will demonstrate techniques using watercolor\, watercolor pencils\, and regular colored pencils. Studio time will allow students to complete a realistic bird composition. \nDavis Studio will supply sketch and watercolor paper\, graphite pencils\, watercolor pencils\, watercolors\, palettes\, and brushes. Students will provide their own sketchbooks and any other art materials they wish to use. Some birds also prefer to sing\, call\, or display in late afternoon and early evening. \nEnjoy a another sunset stroll around the Museum’s forests and clearings and “meet” some of them. Erin Talmage and Ali Wagner will lead the walk. \nAlthough we may see and hear fewer species than we do at dawn\, a late day ramble gives us more time to appreciate each kind and to better learn their songs. All materials provided! \nMore About the Workshop\nMake a small fabric bird based on a real migratory bird found in Vermont for Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene\, a community-sourced conservation art project. Learn about migratory birds in Vermont and the hazards of glass windows\, while we craft together. \nAt this bird-crafting workshop\, you will decorate a small\, pre-made fabric “bird body” with natural fabrics and small decorations like beads\, shells\, and buttons that you choose from our supplies. You’ll attach them using water-soluble tacky glue. The aim is to make your bird resemble a real bird species affected by building collisions. But\, no pressure! DESCRIPTION:Birds and Myth continues in August! Visit often\, as some works are for sale and may go to new homes during the season. \nBirds are some of our teachers\, not only through our senses and observations\, but also through our stories about them. These stories can be factual accounts\, broader myths\, or something in between. Legends\, beliefs\, representations\, truth\, insight\, guidance\, metaphors\, meanings\, and understandings all play a part. \nThe Birds of Vermont Museum’s 2025 art show is centered on the ideas of birds\, myth\, meanings\, metaphors\, and guides. We called for art that brings birds and their meanings to retell an old story\, weaves several together\, represents beliefs\, and/or creates a myth for the future. \nThe show is open when the Museum is (Wednesday – Sundays\, May 1 – October 31) and is included with admission. DESCRIPTION:Join museum staff on Thursday\, July 17\,  at 10 am for a quiet time outdoors in the forest. \nMeet outside the museum by the entrance benches. We will welcome each other\, walk out to the month’s sit spot\, and sit quietly for 30-45 minutes. Together\, let’s rest\, restore our spirits\, watch birds or butterflies\, do a little nature journaling\, or whatever is comfortable and quiet for each. \nEach month we’ll visit a different nearby location on the Museum’s property. DESCRIPTION:Join museum staff on Thursday\, June 19\,  at 10 am for a quiet time outdoors in the forest. \nMeet outside the museum by the entrance benches. We will welcome each other\, walk out to the month’s sit spot\, and sit quietly for 30-45 minutes. Together\, let’s rest\, restore our spirits\, watch birds or butterflies\, do a little nature journaling\, or whatever is comfortable and quiet for each. \nEach month we’ll visit a different nearby location on the Museum’s property. Learn something new\, share what you know\, or both! Most fun for adults\, older children. \nPlease bring your own binoculars and dress for the weather. DESCRIPTION:Not an early riser? You’re not alone. Some birds also prefer to sing\, call\, or display in late afternoon and early evening. \nEnjoy a sunset stroll around the Museum’s forests and clearings and “meet” some of them. Erin Talmage and Ali Wagner will lead the walk. \nAlthough we may see and hear fewer species than we do at dawn\, a late day ramble gives us more time to appreciate each kind and to better learn their songs. \nPlease call 802 434-2167 to reserve your spot. \nMax: 8 (5 spaces left as of May 6)\nSuggested donation: $5-$15\nMeet at the Museum entrance \nConditions: Trails can be muddy and uneven\, and there are some slopes. SUMMARY:Forest Sit (May)
DESCRIPTION:Join museum staff on Thursday at 10 am for a quiet time outdoors in the forest. \nMeet outside the museum by the entrance benches. We will welcome each other\, walk out to the month’s sit spot\, and sit quietly for 30-45 minutes. Together\, let’s rest\, restore our spirits\, watch birds or butterflies\, do a little nature journaling\, or whatever is comfortable and quiet for each. Each month we’ll visit a different nearby location on the Museum’s property. \nPlease register by calling the museum at 802 434-2167. \nMay 15: sit in and around the Retreat’s mini meadow (0.2 mi walk; trail generally level after going down and up from creek\, has roots). \nJune 19: sit in or near the Stone Wall above the pond and upper meadow clearing (0.3 mil mostly uphill but not too steep\, can be damp and a bit uneven). \nJuly 17: sit in or near the walk-in Treehouse (great for those of us with limited mobility\, under 200 feet from parking lot to Treehouse along the dirt road and gravel path; generally level) \nAugust 14: sit in or along the Pond (about 0.2 mi from museum entrance\, light uphill then level; can be uneven) \nSeptember 18: sit in or near the Creek (specific location TBD) \nLocations may change if it is raining. \nPlease bring any of these you wish: water\, tick repellent\, journaling materials\, binoculars\, camp stool\, pillow\, sitting mat. DESCRIPTION:The Museum is delighted to host the Green Mountain Wood Carvers (GMWC) May Carve-In! Stop in to watch a wood carver at work\, ask a question\, or learn about this carving club. \nThe Green Mountain Woodcarvers will be carving in the workshop. The GMWC is a group of carvers from Vermont with members from around New England. They meet monthly for “Carve-Ins” around the State and host a annual Show and Class (in August). We’re delighted to have them at the Museum! \nAt the Carve-In\, carvers talk and work on a variety of woodcarving projects. Carvers are always happy to explain how they carve and to share their expertise with others.
