SUMMARY:Belted Kingfisher (August Woodcarving Seminar)
DESCRIPTION:From August 12-14\, the Birds of Vermont Museum is hosting the Green Mountain Woodcarvers’ annual three-day seminar. This class kicks off the 4-day Festival of Woodcarving\, which culminates with an Outdoor Woodcarving Exhibit on Saturday August 15th (also at the Museum). \nBob Lindemann will be teaching this year’s GMWC/BoVM 3-day Carving seminar\, an 80%-scale Belted Kingfisher. The class will include roughing out the head and body\, adding the details\, and will include setting feet and mounting on a base or branch. \nDue to the bird’s reduced size\, the class is suitable for both novice and more experienced carvers\, as the carving can be don as either a more basic “smoothie” or a with more detail–the carver’s choice. This project is not recommended for “first-time” carvers. \nAs it is still a fairly large piece\, carvers should have a good size carving knife in a addition to a variety of smaller palm tools. \nDuring the class\, participants will be able to finish carving\, setting the eyes and legs\, and beginning to paint. We will finish painting at the GMWC Annual Meeting and Carve-In\, held here at the Museum in October. \nCost: $150 plus a materials fee ($130 plus materials for members of GMWC and/or Birds of Vermont Museum). The materials fee will be collected at the beginning of the class. The registration fee will be collected when you sign up. \nMax: 10 participants FULL \nTo become a member of the Green Mountain Wood Carvers\, visit http://greenmountainwoodcarvers.org/membershippage.html \nTo become a member of the Birds of Vermont Museum\, visit https://birdsofvermont.org/membership \nMore about Belted Kingfishers: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Belted_kingfisher \nThis event is part of the Festival of Woodcarving.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate woodcarving! \nAt the show\, discover some of the variety of styles and techniques possible: from caricature carving to wildfowl\, birds to Scandinavian flat plane carvings. Demonstrations are planned throughout the day of carving styles and methods. This is a good opportunity to learn how woodcarvers\, using simple hand tools\, transform a block of wood into a piece of art. Kids activities and crafts will be available too. \nThe Show also has space for vendors\, and other artisans working with wood products. Members exhibiting in GMWC annual show come from all over New England. Other woodcarving clubs are often represented! including the New England Woodcarvers and Maine Woodcarvers. \nPlease note: this event is outdoors\, weather permitting. Everyone is encouraged to attend. For additional information contact Bob Lindemann by phone at +1 802-229-2062 or by email at rlindemann@pshift.com \nSee also http://greenmountainwoodcarvers.org/show/show.html \nPart of the 2026 Festival of Woodcarving.

SUMMARY:Evening Bird Walk (August 27)
DESCRIPTION:Not an early riser? You’re not alone. Some birds also prefer to sing\, call\, or display in late afternoon and early evening. Enjoy a sunset stroll around the Museum’s forests and clearings and “meet” some of them. \nAlthough we may see and hear fewer species than we do at dawn\, a late day ramble gives us more time to appreciate each kind and to better learn their songs. In addition\, we may observe moths\, frogs\, other insects\, and maybe even a mammal or two. \nRegister by calling 802 434-2167 (a landline). \nMore walks are listed at https://birdsofvermont.org/special-upcoming/ \nMax: 8\nSuggested donation: $5-$15\nMeet at the Museum entrance \nConditions: Trails can be muddy and uneven\, and there are some slopes. We usually walk then pause for observation. Some benches here and there provide additional rest points. \nTick protection is recommended. \nPhoto: Hermit Thrush by Brady Lasher and used with permission.
