SUMMARY:Walking Stick Carving with Bob Lindemann
DESCRIPTION:Create  a Eagle-head walking stick with Bob Lindemann. \nSpend your morning learning to carve a small Bellamy Eagle head with Bob. \nAfter lunch\, Bob will hand out a Striped Maple “Moose Maple” stick for each participant.  You will carve down the top of the stick\, and use what you learned in the morning to carve the eagle onto the top of the stick. You can then carve other things on the stick. \n \nYour walking stick will be “green/wet wood” (just cut) so it’s a bit easier to carve. It will need to dry at home over the winter. These can be painted in the spring (after fully drying) at home\, or add a name on it\, etc. \nOpen to all but a bit of experience helps\, especially when your get to the stick which is more difficult than the practice piece. It is best if you already have a knife and glove; please call the Museum if you do not. \nClass is $45 (there is a $10 discount for members) \nRegister at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/walking-stick-carving-with-bob-lindemann-registration-1044026971777 or use the button below. If the class fills\, please join the waitlist.Register via Eventbrite \nRegister\n\nMax 8 attendees as there are 4 tables\, and when we carve a 4′ stick we like to avoid poking each other…

SUMMARY:October World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Watch for\, protect\, record birds during both migration seasons! \nThe map above shows the movement of birds in this date last year from BirdCast.info. The United States is depicted in white outlines on black\, while a heat map ranging from purple to pink to orange to yellow shows the intensity of bird migration (mostly in the eastern US). Arrows show the directions the birds are moving. (Dokter\, A. M. 2023 of live migration map image. BirdCast\, live migration map; 2023-10-12. Cornell Lab of Ornithology. https://birdcast.info/migration-tools/migration-forecast-maps. Data show estimates of birds that crossed Vermont\, when they crossed\, flight information\, comparison with other nights\, and likely species. Find this current data at https://dashboard.birdcast.info/region/US-VT\n  \nWhile the official day of celebration for World Migratory Bird Day is on the second Saturday in May each year\, the [Smithsonian] recognizes that migratory birds stop in various places along their journey. This means that the celebration can be flexible\, depending on the location. SUMMARY:Power of Perspective: 2024 art exhibit continues in October
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 art show\, The Power of Perspective: shifting points of view opened May 1 and runs through October 31. \nVisit\, and find your own new idea\, question\, or experience.  Our call to artists for this year’s art show asked\, \nConsider the scope of an eagle’s eye—the narrow view of a gleaning warbler—the shadowed sight of a loon underwater. We may see birds above us from the ground\, or below us from a plane. We may use a camera lens to record from afar\, or a magnifier and lamps to perceive what is normally unknown. How does time influence your perspective? What if we “zoom out” from one bird to a species\, to an ecosystem\, to a planet? What if we “zoom in” to one bird to its wing\, to a feather\, to a gene? \nHow does your art reveal a point of view?  …How might a change in perspective alter people’s understanding of the lives and needs of the birds who share our world? \nDiscover how artists\, poets\, sculptors\, photographers and others have answered. The full list of creators is in our blog post\, Power of Perspective. \nImage: Snow Geese on Lake Champlain. Photograph by Diane DeBella. SUMMARY:Meander for Mushrooms
DESCRIPTION:…with Meg Madden\, Myco-influencer \nEver wondered about the mysterious mushrooms that share the forest with us? Are you fungi-curious? Do you see interesting mushrooms in your travels and wish you knew more about these fascinating organisms? \nOn this walk we will explore the woods and learn about the mushrooms we find along the way including what they are\, how to identify them\, and the essential roles that these fungi play in forest ecology. We will also discuss the importance of community science and learn tips and tricks for taking mushroom photos. \nLimit: 15 • please register in advance\nRegister at https://sevendaystickets.com/organizations/birds-of-vermont-museum\nCost: $20 – $40 (Discount for Museum members) \nWear comfortable walking shoes\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and bring your questions and curiosity! A smartphone equipped with the iNaturalist app is a plus\, but not required. \nMeg Madden leads an exploration on the Museum’s trails: to seek\, to find\, and to understand the fungi that live in and on our corner of the wood-wide web. \nNote: this is NOT a foraging program.\n \nAbout Meg Madden\nFungi educator\, author\, and professional photographer\, Meg Madden can often be found in the forests of her childhood practicing what she calls “mushroom yoga” — laying on the ground\, standing on her head\, or balancing precariously on a log — to capture the perfect snail’s-eye view of her favorite photo subject: Fungi! Her colorful\, highly detailed mushroom portraits offer an intimate look into the often-overlooked world of these extraordinary organisms. \nInspired by the belief that people are more likely to take care of something they love\, she finds great joy in facilitating fun and meaningful connections between humans and nature. Meg shares her knowledge and contagious passion for the fantastic world of fungi through visually engaging presentations\, mushroom walks\, and via her Instagram gallery @megmaddendesign. An advocate for fungal diversity and community science\, Meg teaches iNaturalist classes\, organizes educational workshops and Bioblitzes\, and is compiling an Atlas Of Fungi for the state of Vermont. \nwww.instagram.com/megmaddendesign/\nlinktr.ee/MegMadden

SUMMARY:National Hummingbird Day
DESCRIPTION:The first Saturday of September is also a day to celebrate Hummingbirds! For us\, this is the month we say “good-bye ’til next year!” We usually see our last ones (Ruby-throated) in early to mid-September. \nBecause of climate changes and the impact on their habitat\, many species of hummingbirds are currently on the list of vulnerable or endangered species through the IUCN Red List. National Hummingbird Day is here to remind us to appreciate and honor these tiny little creatures. \nMore\, maybe: \n\nhttps://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/national-hummingbird-day/\nhttps://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/search/?q=hummingbird\n\n#NationalHummingbirdDay \nPhoto by Caleb Kenna of a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird\, carved in wood by Bob Spear.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception for “the Power of Perspective”
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we invited artists in all media to shift their usual perspective to show people something different\, something wonderful about birds and their ways of being in the world.  The result is The Power of Perspective: shifting points of view. If you haven’t already visited our show\, come discover the power of an eagle’s gaze\, the imagination of a girl in flight\, the physical and metaphysical roles of different birds\, a wavelength-shift from our eyes to another’s\, and much more. \nOur low-key informal reception for our 2024 show\, The Power of Perspective: shifting points of view will be in the afternoon of July 18. Several of the artists will be here are well. \nExplore visual and written art at your own pace\, meet creators\, be inspired\, ask questions\, and browse through the book of artists’ statements. You are welcome to come early to the Museum and stay for the reception; come at the time of the reception; or just drop in part way through. \nIncluded with Museum admission\, but donations welcome. Please register! If we know how many people are coming \, we will have enough refreshments\, chairs\, and so on. \nRegister at https://sevendaystickets.com/events/reception-for-the-power-of-perspective-art-show-7-18-2024\nBuy Tickets on Eventbrite \nAlthough the art is indoors\, the reception will be generally outdoors\, weather permitting. \nRead more about the show elsewhere on our website. \n  \nImage is of Alison Forrest’s work\, What If I Could Fly?
