where natural history meets art
Welcome to our late spring and early summer events! We’ll walk and bird, sit in the forest, explore art, and maybe even try whittling and wood carving.
The trails are open from sunrise to sunset, every day—we recommend using the south trails (Spear, Discovery, Story) rather than Gale’s, Pop’s, or Bob’s, thanks to flooding last July. Trail maps and more information are available on our website, and are posted at the museum and at trail kiosks as well.
Bob Lindemann is offering a one-day class at the museum, carving a bear cub peeking over a stump. Wood blank and paint provided.
All levels welcome. Great for adults and teens. Younger kids need parental permission. Great skill-building for Scouts and 4-H.
Bring tools, gloves, and lunch. (Contact us if you will need tools or gloves.)
Must register and pay in advance: $35 for Museum and GMWC members • $45 for everyone else. Museum and GMWC members may receive their member discount as a refund at the door or use the code sent to their email. You can become (or renew) a member at registration to receive the discount also!
Class size limited to 10. (Minimum 5 students needed to hold a session.) If class fills, we will have a waiting list. If we get 5 or more people are on a waitlist, we try to arrange additional sessions.

Create a Eagle-head walking stick with Bob Lindemann.
Spend your morning learning to carve a small Bellamy Eagle head with Bob.
After lunch, Bob will hand out a Striped Maple “Moose Maple” stick for each participant. You will carve down the top of the stick, and use what you learned in the morning to carve the eagle onto the top of the stick. You can then carve other things on the stick.
Your walking stick will be “green/wet wood” (just cut) so it’s a bit easier to carve. It will need to dry at home over the winter. These can be painted in the spring (after fully drying) at home, or add a name on it, etc.
Open to all but a bit of experience helps, especially when your get to the stick which is more difficult than the practice piece. It is best if you already have a knife and glove; please call the Museum if you do not.

Celebrate woodcarving!
At the show, discover some of the variety of styles and techniques possible: from caricature carving to wildfowl, birds to Scandinavian flat plane carvings. Demonstrations are planned throughout the day of carving styles and methods. This is a good opportunity to learn how woodcarvers, using simple hand tools, transform a block of wood into a piece of art. Kids activities and crafts will be available too.
The Show also has space for vendors, and other artisans working with wood products. Members exhibiting in GMWC annual show come from all over New England. Other woodcarving clubs are often represented! including the New England Woodcarvers and Maine Woodcarvers.

From August 14 – 16, the Birds of Vermont Museum is hosting the Green Mountain Woodcarvers’ annual three-day seminar. This year, carvers will carve a ¾-scale Mallard drake.
Matt Strong and Bob Lindemann will teach the course; Matt will cover the carving and Bob will assist with the painting. Each carver will have the option of creating the pieces from a simple working decoy, an antique piece, a smoothie, or a more detailed wildfowl carving.

The school year has started, but that isn’t slowing us down up on Sherman Hollow Road. Check out the fall programs at the Birds of Vermont Museum, sign up for one if you like, or just drop by. We’re open Wednesday – Sunday, 10-4, until Halloween. We’re open by appointment other days and after. The trails are open sunrise to sunset, every day. Ever wondered how some woodcarvings get their colors? Painting a carving is a skill practiced by amateur and professional woodcarvers to bring different dynamics and liveliness to many carvings. Join our class and try this for yourself.
Master woodcarver Larry Bertrand is providing a bird ornament for each participant to paint. He will guide attendees in techniques and tools used to color woodcarvings.
