Unexpected Heron

In spring 2023, Larry Bertrand (@BuzzardsBayBirds on Instagram) loaned the Museum the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron.

It’s a rare bird in Vermont, but a few days after the carving went on exhibit, a student from the Rubenstein school at UVM happened to mention they had just seen this species a few days before in Winooski, Vermont. Luckily, they had a photo to confirm their sighting!
