How do artists perceive birds, waters, and the ways we interact?

As you view the exhibit, consider recent history and the ways we tell it; the much-longer history of humans on the landscape in the Green Mountains and Champlain Valley; and the much, much, much longer stories of how birds have evolved with, use, and been influenced by water and waterways.

Woodcarving Sculpture: a head and upper neck of of a heron reaches horizontally. The wood is tinted in semi-transparent blues and reddish colors; the beak is gray and yellow. The sculpture stands on a thin post and a wooden block.

Acrylic painting of a female Belted Kingfisher (a blue, white, and rusty-brown bird) upright but underwater, with a fish in her beak. The water is a pale yellow green, as if if sunlight were reaching down, and the substrate is pebbles with some short green plants.

The Birds of Vermont Museum has been hosting themed community art shows since 2014. Each winter, museum staff develop a bird-related theme for the exhibit and invites submissions in varied media. Our 2026 art show, Wings • Waters • Ways, is centered on the interplay between birds, humans, and the waterways we share.
