How do artists perceive birds, waters, and the ways we interact? As you view the exhibit, consider recent history and the ways we tell it; the much-longer history of humans on the landscape in the Green Mountains and Champlain Valley; and the much, much, much longer stories of how birds have evolved with, use, and been influenced by water and waterways.

GREEN MOUNTAIN WOODCARVERS: BELTED KINGFISHER
3-DAY WOODCARVING CLASS
Wednesday – Friday, August 12 – 14, 2026
The Birds of Vermont Museum is hosting the Green Mountain Woodcarvers’ annual three-day seminar. This class kicks off the 4-day Festival of Woodcarving, which culminates with an Outdoor Woodcarving Exhibit on Saturday August 15th (also at the Museum). Bob Lindemann will be teaching this year’s GMWC/BoVM 3-day Carving seminar, an 80%-scale Belted Kingfisher. The class includes roughing out the head and body, adding the details, and setting feet and mounting on a base or branch.
Visitors to the museum may observe the carvers and ask questions…and join the Green Mountain Woodcarvers club!
OUTDOOR WOODCARVING EXHIBIT: THE GREEN MOUNTAIN WOODCARVERS 53RD ANNUAL SHOW
Saturday, August 15 • 10:00am – 3:00pm
Celebrate woodcarving! At the show, discover some of the variety of woodcarving styles and techniques: from caricature carving to wildfowl, birds to Scandinavian flat plane carvings. Observe demonstrations of carving styles and methods; ask questions of vendors and makers; discover several woodcarving clubs (and perhaps join one). Learn how woodcarvers, using simple hand tools, transform a block of wood into a piece of art. Kids activities and crafts will be available.

DRAWING AND PAINTING BIRDS with CHRIS SELIN
Tuesday, August 18 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Join artist Chris Selin’s workshop on drawing and painting birds. Study the museum’s skeleton and feather collections, Bob Spear’s dioramas, and follow the motion of birds at the bird feeders. This workshop will touch briefly on anatomy before exploring various art materials, types of birds, and their movements.

EVENING BIRD WALK
Thursday, August 27 • 7:00 – 8:00 pm
Not an early riser? You’re not alone. Some birds also prefer to sing, call, or display in late afternoon and early evening. Enjoy a sunset stroll around the Museum’s forests and clearings and “meet” some of them.

AUGUST BIRD MONITORING WALK
Saturday, August 29 • 7:30am
Birders—current, experienced, newbie and would-be—welcome! Join our monthly monitoring walk to record birds at the Museum’s trails, forest, and meadow. Please bring your own binoculars, dress for weather. We recommend bringing tick repellent and a water bottle.
