Brush-wielders, Picture-unhangers, and more: Thanks!

A great big shout-out thank you to the volunteers and staff that made our March 5th Painting Party busy, cheerful, and incredibly successful.

We had more than the usual number of volunteers (some even came a day or more early to help prep) , and much more was accomplished.  The museum is cleaner and fresher.  We went through three and a half gallons of paint, and wow, can we tell! We’ve also taken the opportunity to refresh both what’s on our walls and where we’ve put it, so be sure to come by and admire the results.

All told, we logged over 50 hours of volunteer time. THANK YOU!

Great Backyard Bird Counting at the Museum

We were open last Saturday to celebrate and support the Great Backyard Bird Count. Naturally, we counted birds—and a few others—as well. Our results from that open time follow, and we will have our full count results posted to eBird as well.

Observed on February 19th, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

2011 Annual Art Contest opens

Enter Your Bird Art!

2011 Art Contest Rules

  • Wall of collages and patterned flying birds

    This competition is open to persons aged 0 – 18 years old.

  • The theme of the contest is Birds, Birds, Birds.
  • Flat submissions (paper, collage, etc.) must be no larger than 8 ½” x 11”
    3-D art must be smaller than 6”x 6”x 8”.
  • One entry per person.
    Name, age and contact information must be included with entry.
  • Contestants may use any media.
    Past entries (and winners) have used paint, colored pencils, crayons, markers, clay, wood, or papier-mâché.
  • Entries must be received no later than September 30, 2011.
    Please drop off or mail entries to

  • All entries will be displayed at the museum throughout the 2011 season, so enter early!

Flying Birds: Entries to Art Contest

Winners will be announced at the Museum at our Fall Festival, Saturday October 8, 2011.

Winning entries will be displayed (with artist and parent approval) on the BOVM website or our Facebook page after the festival.

Entries may be picked up at the Museum after Nov. 1, 2011.

We welcome sponsors of our art contest! Contact us if you’d like to donate funds (to purchase prizes) or prizes (we do ask that we get to vet these first).

Past sponsors have included farm and garden stores, art supply shops, artists, and museum members.

Thanksgiving Special Open Days & Gift Shop Sale

Bring your visiting family members to the Museum for an enjoyable outing, from 10 am–4 pm, November 26- 27 (Friday and Saturday).  Start (or finish) your holiday shopping in the Museum gift shop. Great discounts!

Fee: Admission (free for members!)

Most fun for: Friends, family, out-of-town visitors, shoppers, carvers, artists, and turkeys. OK, maybe not the turkeys.

Northern Cardinal Carving Class

We are really looking forward to this coming Saturday’s carving class.  David Tuttle of the Green Mountain Woodcarvers will be teaching it, which means a great combination of experience and fun. He’ll provide the cardinal wood blank and eyes; the Museum will offer snacks and coffee. Northern Cardinal Carving Class at the Birds of Vermont MuseumThe cardinal can stand alone or become a holiday ornament (as in the picture). There’s still some time to pre-register! Call (802) 434-2167 or email us at museum@birdsofvermont.org; you can bring payment to the class or pay by phone. (Aside: do you think we should we enable PayPal?)

If you take this class, please bring your lunch and your own carving tools. Some carving tools may be for sale–let us know when you register. The fee is $25 for Birds of Vermont Museum members / $35 non-members.

Class starts at 9:00am and goes until 4:00pm. Best for older kids and adults, and beginners are welcome.

Birding the Basin: Results from October 24

The weather on October 24th was rain, rain, and then some more rain. And chilly! But 9 intrepid birders traveled the Champlain Valley Basin, checking the skies, fields, and puddles for birds (migrating and otherwise). It was lots of fun and there was a lot of laughter. the Big Sit! 2010 Results

On Sunday,  October 10, the Museum hosted the Loonatics and their Big Sit! circle.  Thanks to Jim O. for coordinating the event and to all the volunteers who joined in. It was a beautiful day, and several people contributed excellent food to keep us warm.
